groundbreaking research meets
transformative education.

Anthropology is a scientific discipline that holistically studies human culture across all its varied aspects.

Anthropology operates on the premise that to exist in the world, human beings must attribute meaning to things. It examines how this meaning is generated and transformed by observing a vast spectrum of phenomena: food, sexuality, politics, religion, medicine, art, perceptions of self, emotions, economics, identities, home, consumption, violence, and more.

The anthropological research method—participant observation—is unique because it encompasses multiple layers of knowledge within a single study:

  • Explicit Knowledge: Official, overt knowledge articulated through language.

  • Semiotic Knowledge: Non-verbal knowledge expressed through the body, gaze, and touch.

  • Practical Knowledge: Embodied behavior that may not always align with what people say or believe they are doing.

  • Historical Knowledge: Deep historical dynamics encoded in symbols, sacred texts, or material artifacts of culture.
